Stephen Handel
Athletic Therapist
BSc. Biology, Dip. Sim, CAT(C)
Stephen Handel, a native of Nanaimo, BC, is the founder of the Algonquin Sports Therapy Clinic. He also serves as the head Athletic Therapist at Algonquin College and a lecturer in the Health and Fitness Department at Algonquin College. Handel received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Victoria in 1999 and his Diploma in Sports Injury Management (Sheridan Scholar) from Sheridan College in 2003. The prestigious Sheridan program included an internship with the Toronto Blue Jays which Handel experienced in 2002.

Handel was on the medical team during the 2001 Canada Summer games. As a Supervisory Athletic Therapist (SAT), Handel guides student Athletic Therapists along the path to national certification. His treatment philosophy is based on a balance of hands-on therapy, exercise prescription, and the latest electro-modalities. Handel is married to Stephanie and they have a son Jacob. He enjoys spending time with his family, racing duathlon and working in the yard.
 

Luke Read
Registered Massage Therapist
BA, RMT
Luke Read is the newest team member of the Algonquin Sports Therapy Clinic. As a Registered Massage Therapist, Luke enjoys assessment and assisting in optimal recovery through therapeutic treatments. Luke became an RMT in 2007 after an intensive program at CDI College. He uses a variety of techniques including Swedish Massage, Joint Mobilization, Myofascial Release, Hydrotherapy, Muscle Energy and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Fascilitation. Luke's most memorable experience involved treatments with the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club during summer training camps. Luke also enjoyed providing massage therapy relief to runners who participated at Ottawa's Army Run, Run For The Cure, and the Terry Fox Run this past year. His treatment style is one that is effective and thorough.

Luke is ready to suggest streching advice and home-care activities for patients to achieve the best results. He welcomes any questions you may have and looks forward to helping maximize your health and performance goals.Luke is a member of the Ontario Massage Therapist Association and a member of the College Massage Therapists of Ontario in good standing.
 

Jo-Ann Chartrand
Registered Nutritonist & Sports Nutrition Advisor
RNCP/ROHP, SNA, LE
Jo-Ann, a graduate from the Edison Institute of Nutrition (2000), was awarded a Certificate in Applied Holistic Nutrition. She then became a member of the IONC, and was granted the designation of RNCP (now ROHP 2009). In 2002, Jo-Ann studied extensively as a Weight Trainer and became certified by BCRPA in British Columbia, where she worked at Fitness World (Gym) as a Wellness Director. She has completed her Certified Sports Nutrition Advisor Program (2008), and currently working on her Dissertation. Jo-Ann will then begin her Masters Diploma in Nutrition (MSN).

As a Holistic & Sports Nutritionist, Jo-Ann specializes in custom tailoring individual plans specific to each person's unique body chemistry and sport. In her practice she utilizes the latest tools to assess the body's composition and cellular health. Her emphasis is on correcting nutritional deficiencies and imbalances, through dietary and lifestyle changes to restore balance to the body.
